Great coffee, beautiful design and decent breakfast? If that combination sounds good to you, Federal Café in Barcelona is the place to be!
Named after a small town in Australia, Federal brings the laid back vibe of down under to Barcelona. The first location opened in the popular ‘brunch’ street Calle Parlement, in the Sant Antoni neighborhood. With an idyllic rooftop terrace it quickly became a popular brunch spot. It results in queues in the weekend, but if you pass by during the week it will surely have a spot.
My favourite however is their location in Gotico. Slightly hidden in the small streets of this old neighborhood, but very spacious and with an amazing breakfast/brunch menu.
The coffee is – as said before – great, but they offer a wide range of shakes and smoothies too. Apart from that, you’ll find the usual eggs, French toast, granola and amazing croissants with for example melted cheese and Serrano ham. Delicious!
The design is beautiful, although it would strike me more as Scandinavian than Australian. It’s a bright combination of vintage furniture and modern items. The concrete floor and open bar against the brick wall give it an industrial look.
It’s my hotspot for a coffee break / work combo, so I normally take a comfortable seat inside. It does not have a terrace, but if you come here to sit back and relax, I recommend the lovely window seats.
Enjoy a little Australian oasis in the old gothic streets of Barcelona!
